Byron Royce "Hoot" Hooten

January 14, 1941 – January 11, 2026

Byron “Hoot” Hooten was born the eldest of 5 brothers: Byron “Hoot”, Tommy, Ronny, John, and Joe.

He left Florala, Alabama where they grew up to attend the U.S. Air Force Academy where he earned his commission as a 2nd Lieutenant on June 3, 1964.

During his over 30 years of service, his primary specialties were B-52 Bomber Pilot, C-130 Instructor Pilot, Special Operations Pilot, Wing Commander, and Operations Commander. During this time a few of the commendations he earned include the Defense Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit, Distinguished Flying Cross, Bronze Star, and Meritorious Service Medal.

He served in Vietnam, Desert Shield/Storm, and Grenada, but what he was most proud of was “Operation Homecoming” which brought POW’s home from Vietnam and was “the most remarkable and emotional experience of my life until the death of Charlotte”.

He was married to Charlotte June Adams, mother to their sons, on May 18, 1967 until her passing in Temple Terrace, FL on July 14, 2009. He was then married to Sandra Lee Dunkle on September 24, 2011. They lived happily in The Villages, FL until his passing on January 11, 2026.

He is survived by his brothers Tommy, John, and Joe, his wife Sandy, her daughter Tara, and his sons Todd and Josh.
